EURO Talks Character and USA Guest John Vorhaus Transcript December 11, 2011

#Scriptchat TOPIC: Characters

EURO chat kicked off the character topic with loads of information, and the USA group picked it up with guest writer John Vorhaus @TrueFactBarFact. John shared incredible insight into his character development process, as well as tips from his books. We thank John for being our final guest of 2011, another amazing year at Scriptchat. So grab your notepad and read on. One snag was Tweet Reports site is down, so I had to grab the transcript via Tweetchat… which means you have some backwards reading ahead. Simply scroll down and read from bottom to top. Apologies. Try to enjoy anyway! The information is worth the eye strain. @jeannevb

EURO Moderator: Teenie Russell @teenierussell

@teenierussell thanks everyone #scriptchat

@TaroJ From memory it took 1 scene to define Al Swearengen as a character in Deadwood (he got henchmen to kill other henchmen). #scriptchat

@stuartsharpe there will always be archetypes, sure. But the paths male chrs tread are not always so clear cut or predictable #scriptchat
SohoGuy 8:58pm via web

@sianlawson @Bang2write @john_hunter And although the lead Cylon was there to be sexy, she was ultimately a great character #scriptchat
TaroJ 8:58pm via Twitter for iPhone

@HateTheHate true, I write TV myself but each individual ep still needs to make sense. But the characters can really develop. #scriptchat
SohoGuy 8:57pm via web

@SohoGuy I really like soap: really varied, flawed, tragic yet funny female chrs in @itvcorrie - esp Carla + Becky @john_hunter #scriptchat
Will_Scothern 8:55pm via web

@sianlawson @SohoGuy @Bang2write @john_hunter I found most of them inconsistent...aside from the President. #scriptchat
HateTheHate 8:55pm via web

@TaroJ They have the luxury of time (series) but write a 3hr film and you should have some decent characters in there. #scriptchat :)
SohoGuy 8:55pm via web

@sianlawson @Bang2write @john_hunter Yes! Because I adore adore adore Battlestar Galactica esp the President! #scriptchat
alli_and_that 8:54pm via web

@SohoGuy @teenierussell Because then you support it with the characters actions in the rest of the film. Three words is a base. #scriptchat
antonsays 8:54pm via TweetDeck

#scriptchat James Bond turned main character introduction into its main 'thing'. Those opening scenes. Wow! Usually biggest part of budget
Will_Scothern 8:54pm via web

@Will_Scothern @Bang2write @john_hunter Must watch more of that! #scriptchat
alli_and_that 8:53pm via web

@SohoGuy @DemonSerge @teenierussell Depends on your voice for character descriptions, but generally 3 words is encouraged. #scriptchat

#scriptchat writing character descriptions too specific can be bad as a reader needs to be able to visualise an actual actor in the role

@Helena_Ward novels allow more characterisation, why I love them so ;) Still possible to have more variation in scripts tho #scriptchat
SohoGuy 8:51pm via web

@alli_and_that @DemonSerge @teenierussell Is it? Cool! I prefer it short. #scriptchat

@SohoGuy @DemonSerge @teenierussell @alli_and_that Didn't RTD start in radio? Where you must get the char across in the dialogue #scriptchat
Will_Scothern 8:51pm via web

@SohoGuy If you're writing 100 word descriptions you're spending far to much time on it. #scriptchat
alli_and_that 8:50pm via web

@Bang2write Sucks, doesn't it? That's why I'm loving writing this rom-com, cause the girls aren't like that. #scriptchat

antonsays 8:50pm via TweetDeck

@teenierussell @alli_and_that ok i still liked it but it took a dive #scriptchat
alli_and_that 8:50pm via web

@SohoGuy @DemonSerge @teenierussell 3 word description is fairly standard though. #scriptchat

@stuartsharpe sure there are 2D male chrs. But what is striking is the VARIATION of them... That's all I want, really #scriptchat
antonsays 8:50pm via TweetDeck

@teenierussell @alli_and_that I actually ended up not liking it. Amazingly funny 1st half and then it got lost in drama & length #scriptchat

@Helena_Ward villains are always great because they sometimes do the things we'd love to but are wrong. IMO #scriptchat

@antonsays Yeah, me too. #scriptchat
Helena_Ward 8:47pm via Twitter for iPhone

@Bang2write currently writing a novel with 3 strong female characters. Can't write any other way #scriptchat
HateTheHate 8:46pm via web

#scriptchat I think that's why villains get such good press ... once they have henchmen actors can just chew scenery! :P
Bang2write 8:46pm via ÜberSocial for BlackBerry

@LadyChanie yes!! All of us are individuals, yet even female writers will go for stereotype. Shame #scriptchat
SohoGuy 8:46pm via web

@sianlawson Yes. I don't think I do it, but can be hard to divorce my thoughts from theirs... At least I know it's a prob :-) #scriptchat
HateTheHate 8:45pm via web

#scriptchat Villains need henchmen! A man in control of other nasty "men" does not need much more character building! #holywood
antonsays 8:45pm via TweetDeck

#scriptchat @alli_and_that I think Bridesmaids was fantastic with its characters. Certainly wasn't the problem I had with the film
Bang2write 8:45pm via ÜberSocial for BlackBerry

@SohoGuy no, she was great, but yet again a seminal female chr was actually never intended that way - why are women forgotten? #scriptchat
DemonSerge 8:45pm via Twitter for iPhone

@teenierussell @alli_and_that there are writers who don't really describe characters at all, just name him/her, and move on. #scriptchat
SohoGuy 8:45pm via web

@rosieclaverton Nah, that sounds terrifying! ;-) #scriptchat
TaroJ 8:45pm via Twitter for iPhone

@SohoGuy all my characters were starting out as the same person so I thought what could I do to change that #scriptchat
john_hunter 8:44pm via HootSuite

RT @rosieclaverton: I write a lot of female scientists and doctors, because I know them personally. So...go out and meet women? #scriptchat
Will_Scothern 8:44pm via web

@alli_and_that @teenierussell Still an intro dependant more on the description of the character than the action... #scriptchat
sianlawson 8:44pm via web

@SohoGuy Perhaps everyone has enough facets to their own personality to make up a whole cast, without noticing they're all you #scriptchat
rosieclaverton 8:43pm via HootSuite

I write a lot of female scientists and doctors, because I know them personally. So...go out and meet women? #scriptchat
john_hunter 8:43pm via web

#scriptchat (lost who asked) I think it's always obvious when film has relied on casting (eg) Ben Stiller instead of writing good character.
SohoGuy 8:43pm via web

@TaroJ Really? Did something speciific annoy you? #scriptchat
alli_and_that 8:42pm via TweetChat

@Will_Scothern @teenierussell But if they're minor, their character doesn't matter as much at that point in the story. #scriptchat
Mockwriter 8:42pm via TweetChat

@Bang2write Next script has female lead that doesn't fit any of those. That's the intention, anyway. #scriptchat
Will_Scothern 8:42pm via web

@Bang2write I don't particularly, I just give them a voice that fits the world...the rest is semantics. #scriptchat
teenierussell 8:42pm via TweetDeck

@alli_and_that I meant that it's not just about how they are described but def also about the actions etc, #badlyphrased #scriptchat
alli_and_that 8:41pm via TweetChat

@Bang2write Or obsessed with blokes? #scriptchat

@alli_and_that @TaroJ @sohoguy @perczynski I think success of #bridesmaids shook up a lot of #oldschool thinking. #scriptchat
TaroJ 8:41pm via Twitter for iPhone

All the great intros seem really interesting, whilst revealing a huge amount about the character Darth Vader Peter Venkman, Leon #scriptchat
john_hunter 8:41pm via web

@Bang2write Is there a fear of perceived audience not responding to non-traditional archetypes (ie - cliches) #scriptchat
Bang2write 8:41pm via ÜberSocial for BlackBerry

The female chrs I see regularly are depressed and/or pregnant or kickass martial artists. Where are the rest? Why no variation? #scriptchat
Will_Scothern 8:40pm via web

@alli_and_that @teenierussell Maybe they start out a minor character, where the description is more relevant than action... #scriptchat
SohoGuy 8:40pm via web

@Bang2write @TaroJ @rosieclaverton @perczynski @teenierussell But it didn't make her a bad female character? (I can't recall it) #scriptchat
Bang2write 8:39pm via ÜberSocial for BlackBerry

We really need to ask WHY scribes find it so difficult to write female chrs - it's not just male writers, either!! #scriptchat
SohoGuy 8:39pm via web

@Will_Scothern I assume so. I imagine an actor reads into it and performs accordingly, often differently from what I've heard #scriptchat
alli_and_that 8:39pm via web

@elizabethkarr @TaroJ @sohoguy @perczynski What about something like Bridesmaids? #scriptchat
Perczynski 8:39pm via web

IMO nowadays people want to have introduction max. shortened. They all wait for action. When the movie starts! #scriptchat
Bang2write 8:39pm via ÜberSocial for BlackBerry

@Perczynski @TaroJ @rosieclaverton @sohoguy @teenierussell fraid so, had the writer tell us at @londonswf : ( #scriptchat
alli_and_that 8:38pm via web

@Will_Scothern @teenierussell No - why do they have a smaller presence than anyone else? That tells you about character too. #scriptchat
elizabethkarr 8:38pm via web

@TaroJ @alli_and_that @sohoguy @perczynski I've been told girls will go see male lead,reverse harder. #whymalecharactersdominate #scriptchat

@bang2write You make a good point. Though I tend to do it at a stage where the character fills a role in a piece. Then flesh out #scriptchat
